UNICEF TARGETS 30MILLION NIGERIAN CHILDREN FOR VITAMIN A SUPPLEMENT

The United Nations Children Fund, UNICEF, has targeted to reach 30 million children in Nigeria with vitamin A supplement before the end of the year.

The UNICEF chief Nutrition specialist, Ms Nemat Hajeebjoy stated this at a one day advocacy and accountability meeting with commissioners of health, Budget and National planning on new born and child health.

The advocacy meeting was to secure the commitment and financial support of commissioners of state on nutrition and maternal and child health week.

As well as to enhance and increase quality Coverage of nutrition intervention in all states.

The UNICEF chief nutrition specialist stressed that Nigeria had a high rate of maternal, newborn and child deaths but would be reduced through proper nutrition.

Disclosing the level of malnutrition in the geopolitical zones, the representative of the Nutrition International Nigeria, Ms Titilayo Bolade said burden of malnutrition was extremely high in the northeast and northwest, calling on commissioners in the region to join hands in changing the future of Nigerians by 2025.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of budget and National planning, Mrs Olushola Idowu highlights the Impact of malnutrition on Economic Development to include reduced labor productivity, which impedes agricultural and industrial production.
