SPEAKER URGES PARLIAMENTS TO TACKLE HATE SPEECH

The speaker House of Representatives Femi Gbajabiamila says those who abuse the right of freedom of expression ought to be held accountable for their actions.

This he stressed is necessary especially when such actions result in evident bad outcomes.

Gbajabiamila was speaking on the topic ‘Countering misinformation and hate speech on and offline requires stronger regulations’ at the fifth world conference of speakers of parliament taking place in Vienna, Austria.

He said parliaments must find in all regulatory or legislative interventions, a balance between protecting the right to free speech and the right to life, peace and dignity.

The speaker added that technology and new media have ushered democratization of public debate which when properly managed could be of benefit, but could also be manipulated thereby being threats to society.
