**: The identities of the NAF pilots who died in the crash at the 401 FTS NAF Base Kaduna during training have been confirmed. Flight lieutenant Abubakar Alkali and Flight lieutenant Elijah Karatu were both students and not Instructor and student as earlier reported.
The two officers were among NAF pilots who returned from Pakistan in April 2021 following a six-month training in basic flying among other courses. Nigeria has experienced 11 military plane crashes with no fewer than 33 military officers perishing between 2015 and 2021, and losing air plaforms including F-7NI jet and Augusta Westland helicopter among others.
In 2021, the Nigerian Air Force lost at least three jets. They were the Beechcraft King Air 350i which went down with all seven crew members on board in Abuja on 21 February; the Alpha Jet which went off radar on 21 March and another which crashed in Zamfara while supporting troops. 2021 also witnessed the crash of the NAF jet conveying Nigeria’s 25th Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru and 10 other officers on board at the Kaduna Airport.
Meanwhile, the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Oladayo Amao has visited the 401 FTS Kaduna and commiserated with the families and colleagues of the departed, giving assurance of investigating the cause and ensuring the adoption of stricter measures which would avert such air mishaps.
