HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES ON CREATION OF SPECIAL SEATS FOR WOMEN

The House of Representatives has passed for second reading a constitutional amendment bill seeking creation of special seats for women.

The bill sponsored by the House Deputy Chief Whip Nkeiruka Onyejeocha and 85 others would enable creation of additional special seats for women in the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly.

The constituencies when created will be contested by women only to serve as a temporary measure to promote women’s representation.

The provision will however be subjected to a review after four general election cycles of sixteen years for the purpose of either retaining, increasing or abolishing the temporary measure.
